Red-cockaded Woodpeckers at Air Force Bombing Range (C)
Take an early morning trip to watch the awakening of endangered Red-cockaded Woodpeckers. Travel into a colony area on the US Air Force’s Dare County Range to learn about the management and ecology of this unique species in its unusual pond pine pocosin habitat. Also look for six other species of woodpeckers and various songbirds that can be seen in this area. Unpaved roads; 4x4 recommended. Outer Banks Welcome Center on Roanoke Island at east end of Virginia Dare Bridge. 6 to 11 a.m. Moderate. Cost $20. Robert Montgomery, Jay Ross

North Pond (7)
Bird the north and south dikes of North Pond on Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. North Pond Trail (south dike of North Pond) is maintained for easy walking and is universally accessible. This program is ideal for beginning birders. Pea Island Refuge Visitor Center. 7:30 to 11 a.m. Easy. Cost $20. Lee Yoder

Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge Birding (H)
Explore the Refuge’s extensive farm fields for raptors such as Bald Eagles, as well as for birds in grassland and roadside vegetation. Butterflies possible, weather permitting. Red wolf and black bear sightings possible. Creef Cut parking area. 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. Moderate. Cost $20. Jeff Lewis

Cape Hatteras (4)
The Point, the Salt Pond and the sandy beach are important areas of Cape Hatteras National Seashore for viewing unusual gulls, seabirds, shorebirds, ducks, waders and raptors. Brown Pelicans are sure to be seen. Black Skimmers and American Oystercatchers are possible. Learn to separate the six possible species of gulls and five species of terns. Limited to nine. 4x4 transportation is provided. Cape Hatteras Lighthouse visitor parking area. 8 to 11:30 a.m.. Easy. Cost $25. Eric Dean, Bunny Doolittle, Neal or Pat Moore, Taylor Piephoff

Upper Milltail Creek Canoe Trip (H)
Explore this narrow, winding creek through the heart of Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. Sheltered paddling will give participants a close look at the wildlife that calls the refuge home, including Pileated Woodpeckers, river otters and a variety of reptiles and amphibians. A shuttle will be provided back to the launch site. Bring lunch and hydration. Creef Cut parking area. 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost $40. US Fish and Wildlife Service staff
